Annual Fecal Exam: Cats often get Tapeworm from fleas and roundworms from eating mice. Roundworms can pass on to people, especially children. Females spayed before first heat cycle reduce mammary cancer risks by 99%. Geriatric Panel: As cats enter their senior years, around 8-10 years of age, blood and urine panels are recommended every 6-12 months. FIV and FeLV: The Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency virus status should be known before introducing cats to each other since there is no cure for these conditions. Microchip and Pet Tags: All cats could benefit from a microchip and pet tags so can they can be found if sneak out or go out. |
VaccinesRabies vaccine: Yearly for all outdoor cats and those in cities that require them.
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP): Administer one year after kitten vaccination series (every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks old) and then every 3 years. Core vaccine per UC Davis. Feline Leukemia Virus Vaccine (FeLV): Incurable condition. Cats who may be exposed to others should be vaccinated with a series of two vaccines 2-4 weeks apart, then booster one year later and then every 2 years. All cats in the same household should have known FeLV status with a blood test. |
Everyday Care and Information
Dental care: Brush daily (see video)- flavored toothpaste so something to look forward to. We also recommend Hill's T/D diet food for tartar control or Science Diet Oral Care.
Nutrition: Well balanced commercial food and measure amount recommended on label. Increase or decrease as needed to gain or lose weight. It is advisable to feed dental diet for oral health but also daily meals of canned food for extra moisture, which is extremely important in male cats since concentrated urine can precipitate crystals and lead to urinary obstruction, which is a life threatening emergency.
